Romanticism can be described as a human pursuit of the importance of beauty since humans have the ability to feel emotions. People, of necessity, have two other faculties: intellect and will, each of which follow the virtues of honesty and goodness. Human beings instinctively respond with their faculty of emotion when intelligence (reason) is emphasized one-sidedly, as in the Enlightenment in the eighteenth century, and when will is emphasized heavily, as in Immanuel Kant's moral theory at the end of the eighteenth century. Some modernist authors contend that Romanticism is a part of the Counter-Enlightenment, a pejorative term for movements or theories that they see as opposing the Enlightenment's logic and objectivity that refers to inherent value fostering emotionalism, superstition, and anarchy. While, Russian formalism distinctly uses consequential value. The stress on the utilitarian position of literary instruments, as well as its initial definition of literary background, distinguish Russian formalism. To the exclusion of conventional psychological and cultural-historical methods, Russian Formalists advocated a "physical" framework for learning poetic vocabulary. "It was bent on delimiting literary theory from contiguous fields such as psychology, economics, and academic history, and the list theoreticians concentrated on the 'distinguishing characteristics' of literature, on the creative instruments unique to imaginative prose," Erlich explains
