Decoding is the ability to apply your knowledge of letter-sound relationships, including knowledge of letter patterns, to correctly pronounce written words. Understanding these relationships gives children the ability to recognize familiar words quickly and to figure out words they haven't seen before.
Autism and hyperlexia imply that there is disconnect between decoding and reading comprehension. The readers are able to decode words without difficulty but have low reading comprehension. Dyslexia implies that kids with this learning disability mainly have trouble decoding, or connecting printed text to a spoken word.
