As a teacher, I should emphasize the importance of good speaking skills as a major asset to my students. I will have to take my students through the competencies of good speaking skills. Being a good speaker requires a range of skills beyond accurate grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, though these are the basic building blocks that enable a message to be understood. When presenting a speech, an effective communicator chooses the words they use, and the way in which they speak to different people in different situations like giving a keynote speech at an academic event. To be a good speaker, one has to possess skills such as;

• Avoiding repetition
• Responding appropriately while listening
• Turn-taking techniques
• Politeness
• Circumlocution (talking around unknown words using known language)
• Extending ideas
