Nunan (2011:23) identifies six stages of the listening process. Explain in your own words,
your understanding of:
hearing (first stage)
remembering (fourth stage)
Hearing is the first stage of the listening process. It is a physiological process that involves the passive identifying and registering of sounds as soundwaves hit the eardrum. The hearing process is the first part of the receiving process and listening takes place only if the other parts of the listening process occur after hearing.
Remembering is the fourth stage of the listening process. It is a recollection of the message after receiving it. Understanding entails assigning meaning to sounds after hearing, selecting and attending to sounds.
