Discuss the following claim: “it is irrelevant what the motives of professionals are; what matters is that they do what is right.” In your answer, distinguish questions about the motives for a specific right action and question about habits or patterns of motivation throughout a career.
There are actually different types of ethical theories in order to elucidate statement. Some would critic & others will justify claim.
Hence, if we see Virtue ethics theory & self realization theory then the statement would be the centre to great ethics.
Virtue ethics states that good character is central to morality. Whereas, Self-realization ethics emphasizes the moral significance of self-fulfillment. Thus if a person motives something morally wrong irrespecitive of the consequence, then its owuld ethically wrong action according to these two.
On other hand, if we look at utilitarianism, that says what actually matters is consequence, then irrespective of the motive of doer, if the action brings out most good to most of people, then the action can be justified as moral action.
Thus, if the habit of a professional grow to desire or intend to bring evil consequences from his actions, he would in wome times succeeds. Therefore, as the constant evil intentions can drive to become bad habits to give bad consequences, from all theories the statement can not be justified.
