The message of forgiveness surprized the country, but those words set the tone and unified the public when it could have certainly gone in a conflicting direction. Reverend Manning points out that forgiveness is harmony, and he anticipates others appreciate it has the power to reconcile and make peace. Thus, In John's Gospel (20:23), Jesus articulates to his disciples, "If you forgive anyone's sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven".
