Question #181551

Read the Los Angeles Times article :Teen may face charge in fatal crash

Lamborghini slammed into woman’s car in West L.A.,

killing her.

BY JAMES QUEALLY

Write a response to the question: should the teenager in this case be charged as an adult, as a juvenile, or not charged at all (meaning he should not go to trial and instead should be given alternatives to incarceration).

Your answer must address the following:

  1. The teen’s age (and what we know about teenage brain development)
  2. The consequences of his actions (is there a victim, what happened to them)
  3. The race/ethnicity and socio-economic status of both parties (the teen and the victim)
  4. Your thoughts/feelings/beliefs on whether or not you feel incarceration works, doesn’t work, should only be used in extreme cases (if so, does this count as an extreme case), etc.

I think the teenager in this case should be charged as a juvenile because according to the article he is a 17-years-old, meaning he is still developing and he is capable of change compared to adults. One of the reasons why this teenager should be charged is because he might not have been street racing but he was speeding and ended up slamming into Monique Munoz’s car which led to her death, making her the victim. The charges passed should not depend on ethnicity or the social-economic status of the teen or the victim only the law should apply. I believe incarceration works for this case and that is why the court should get into the depth of it.
