Urbanization is key to economic development in any nation as wealth is primarily generated in cities. Nonetheless, urbanization has been associated with environmental pollution from air pollution to soil pollution, water pollution, loss of biodiversity and land degradation. Urbanization in Nigeria has resulted to overexploitation of the available natural resources such as water, fossil fuel, energy and forest vegetation due to the increasing population in urban centers. Consequently, urbanization has compelled people to live in overcrowded areas particularly slums where clean water, sanitation and electricity is a menace. Such overcrowding of people in such areas is linked to increased air, soil and water pollution due to poor sewerage draining system, constant flow of water and degraded air quality linked to alternative sources of energy such as firewood and charcoal.

Moreover, industries established to provide employment to the increasing population are responsible for emitting pollutants in the environment. They release toxic dust and smoke into the air, toxic waste into surrounding ground and water bodies due to weak environmental policies in place alongside poor waste management initiatives, and excessive noise from the machineries utilized in production. Similarly, increased population translates to increased infrastructural development thus the presence of more vehicles on the roads contributing to air pollution through the emission of carbon. While urbanization is a critical aspect of the Nigerian economy,

it is detrimental to the ecosystem thus the need to regulate the most common sources of pollutants in urban centers such as factories as a way of mitigating the menace.
