When Malcolm X says that he couldn't have gotten way out of books with a wedge, one can infer that he was passionate about reading. The statement was part of his autobiography where he was describing his new found freedom in prison when he learnt how to read and how much time he spent reading books in prison. According to him, if other people threaten to beat him with a wedge if he did not stop reading, he would still have chosen to read.
