Stressing and intonation communicates additional meaning, attitude or emotions. For instance, in this sentence, "Stop fooling around!", i would stress the word "STOP" to emphasize my urge for the recipient to quit messing around. Similarly, in the sentence, "I am sorry." I would reduce my intonation after "SORRY" to enable the recipient to feel that am sincere about the apology and my emotion is genuine.
