Question #293766

3. A 150X 100 X 15 mm mild steel angle is to be welded to a mild steel plate by fillet

weld along the edge of 150mm leg. A tensile load of 200kN acts through the gravity

axis of the angle. Determine weld lengths if the centre of gravity is at distance of

50mm from end B as shown in the figure below. The allowable shear stress in weld

material is 73N/mm2

Given static loading =200 kN = 300 ×103\times 10^3 N ,here dimension is given as 200 ×150×10\times 150\times 10 ,

permissible shear stress= 73 kNmm2\frac{kN}{mm^2} ,here a+b=200

s= size of weld = thickness= 10 ,we know that

for single weld

200×103=0.707×s×l×τ200 \times 10 ^3=0.707 \times s \times l\times \tau

on putting value we can get value of l

l= 303.09 mm

la+lb=565.77l_a+ l_b=565.77

now distance of centroidal axis from bottom angle

b=55.3 and a= 144.7 so

la=l×ba+bl_a= \frac{l\times b}{a+b}

la=156.44l_a=156.44 and lb=358.88l_b= 358.88
