Solve the following problems and show your solution.
3. An 18 mm diameter rivet is used to fasten two 25 mm thick plate. If the shearing stress of the rivet is
75 MPa, what tensile force is applied in each plate to shear the bolt?
4. A steel hollow tube is to carry a tensile load of 600 kN at a stress of 145 MPa. If the outside diameter
is 10 times the tube thickness, determine the thickness of the tube.
5. A steel wire 12 m long, hanging vertically supports a tensile load of 3 kN. Neglecting the weight of
wire, determine the required diameter if the stress is not to exceed 130 MPa and the total elongation
is not to exceed 130 MPa and the total elongation is not to exceed 6 mm. Let E = 220 MPa.
6. A centrifugal pump is connected to a motor by means of a coupling. The pump capacity is 4000 L/min of water against a head of 8 m. If the efficiency of the pump is 70% at the speed of 550 rpm, determine
the torsional stress developed on the 50 mm motor shaft.
