In task 3 you were asked to identify legislations and EU directives relating to environmental management. Explain the consequences of management not abiding by legislations and regulations when carrying out their roles and responsibilities.       

The Managing Director of a small engineering company has sought your advice. An employee has lost their sight in one eye and suffered severe burns after being splashed by a corrosive chemical that leaked from a storage tank being prepared for internal cleaning. At the time of the incident there was no-one on the premises trained in first aid and the emergency shower and eye wash facilities were out of action. There was also no H&S signage in the immediate work area. The MD has asked you to research the possible consequences for the company and the people carrying roles and responsibilities for H&S.

Identify the relevant legislation and regulations made under health and safety and explain the possible consequences of management not abiding by the requirements of the appropriate legislation. Include within your answer a description of some typical breaches that may have been committed in this engineering company.

Environmental management is becoming a key focus for many engineering organisations; your line manager wants you to explain the key features of the relevant legislation. 

Produce a poster or presentation detailing the key features of the relevant legislation and EU directives with regard to environmental management.

Using the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 as the principal source of legislation, describe the roles and responsibilities of the following in an electrical and mechanical environment:

➢ Employers.

➢ Self-employed (subcontractors).

➢ Employees.

➢ Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Inspectors.

You should make reference to appropriate regulations where necessary.

You are required to research two different engineering environments that you have some knowledge of. It may be best if one is an electrical environment and one a mechanical environment, in a Word table. For each of these environments: 

(a) Identify a minimum of four different sets of regulations that would be relevant in both environments 

(b) Describe a minimum of three key features of each of the sets of regulations you have chosen
