Would Chelex-100, from Bio-Rad, be effect for treating cardiomyopathy in patients who have cobalt poisoning? The cobalt’s deposited in the myocardium and chewed is a chelating exam.
Chelex-100 is a chelating ion-exchange resin that preferentially binds transition metal ions, including cobalt. As a result, Chelex-100 can be used to chelate cobalt ions from the solution. However, Chelex-100 is an insoluble resin consisting of a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer. Therefore, Chelex-100 cannot be injected into the blood to treat cobalt poisoning.
