Transcription is the process of RNA synthesis using DNA as a template. This is a transfer of genetic information from DNA to RNA that occurs in all living cells. Transcription is catalyzed by the enzyme DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. RNA polymerase moves along the DNA molecule in the direction of 3'→ 5'. During the process, RNA polymerase uses free nucleoside triphosphates that are attached via phosphodiester bonds formed between the phosphate group and hydroxyl groups of ribose. This continuous process results in the formation of an RNA molecule that is complementary to a DNA template.
