Nuisance organisms are non-pathogenic living organisms that are normally present in drinking water. Although these organisms do not cause the disease, they contribute to the organoleptic properties of water, as well as its corrosion activity. As a result, nuisance species are known to cause problems with water supply. For example, iron bacteria present in drinking water stimulate iron oxidation leading to the formation of rust and clog pipes in water distribution systems. Sulfur bacteria lead to the formation of hydrogen sulfide causing the bad odor and taste of drinking water and water distribution systems.
