Wastewater contains gases that are produced during the decomposition of organic matter, including carbon dioxide, methane, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, nitrogen oxides, chlorine, bromine, etc. As some of these gases are polar covalent compounds, many of them possess high solubility in water (i.e., ammonia). A high concentration of these gases in water may lead to toxic effects on aquatic organisms and humans.
