What do we obtain upon CID?
I. Fragmentation of the precursor ions
II. Fragmentation of the parent ion
III. Fragmentation of product ions
a. II and III
b. I and III
c. I and II
d. Only I
e. I, II and III
A parent ion is an electrically charged molecular moiety which may be dissociated to form fragments, one or more of which may be electrically charged, and one or more neutral species.
Collision induced dissociation (CID) is a mass spectrometry technique to induce fragmentation of selected ions in gas phase .
The selected ions are called precursor ions and the fragmented ions are called product ions.
Therefore, upon CID, fragmentation of precursor ions is obtained.
