pH values are determined on a logarithmic scale. pH values are reported as a number between 0 and 14 as a standard pH unit. This unit is equivalent to the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion molar concentration (-log(H+)) in the solution.
pH = 12, [H+] = 10-12 mol/L
pH = 7, [H+] = 10-7 mol/L
20 extra litres of normal water would have to be added to bring the pH down to 7.
