Question:

What is general rule determining which polarities of solids dissolve in which polarity of liquids?

Answer:

The general rule “Like dissolves like” is that the substances of similar polarity will dissolve in one another: polar solids in polar liquids and non-polar solids in non-polar liquids. For example, inorganic salts that have ionic character (extreme polarity) will dissolve well in polar liquids (e.g. water). On the other hand, non-polar solids will dissolve well in non-polar liquids.
