Carbon reacts with oxygen to form two compounds. Compound A contains 2.61 g of carbon for every 3.49 g of oxygen.  Compound B contains 6.94 g of carbon for every 18.5 g of oxygen. What is the smallest whole mass ratio of oxygen that combines with a fixed mass of carbon.

The smallest whole mass ratio =18.5÷6.94=2.6618.5÷6.94=2.66

Therefore mass ratio of oxygen to carbon of 2.66:1
