A 22.75 gram sample of copper is heated in the presence of excess chlorine. A metal chloride is formed with a mass of 35.44 g. Determine the empirical formula of the metal chloride.
Cu molar mass us 63.55g/mol
22.75 g corresponds to 22.75g/(63.55g/mol)
= 0.357 mol
Reacting with chlorine it could fofn CuCl or CuCl2 .
Chlorine molar mass is 35.50 g/mol
So CuCl molar mass is 99g/mol and
CuCl2 molar mass is 134.55g/mol
For CuCl is = 0.357×99 = 35.343g
Which is corresponds to 35.50g
Hence CuCl is the empirical formula
