Use the activity series to predict if there will be a reaction in the following cases. If a reaction does not occur write “no reaction”, but if a reaction occurs, write a balanced equation.
Cu + Al2(SO4)3
Al + Pb(NO3)2 →
Cl2 + NaI →
Al + CuCl2 →
Br2 + CaI2
According to activity series Al is more reactive than Cu and Pb. So Al can replace these metals in a reaction but Cu can not replace Al. Hence, the first reaction is not possible.
2 Al + 3 Pb(NO3)2= 3 Pb + 2 Al(NO3)2.
2 Al + 3 CuCl2 = 3 Cu + 2 AlCl3.
According to activity series of halogens Cl2 and Br2 is more reactive than I2. Hence Cl and Br can replace I in a reaction.
Cl2 + 2 NaI = I2 + 2 NaCl.
Br2 + CaI2 = I2 + CaBr2.
