Firstly, the donor's blood type and Rh-factor is determined. Also, the blood is screened for a variety of diseases that can potentially be transferred through the blood. The most common include: hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, HIV, West Nile Virus, human T-lymphotropic virus, as well as tests for syphilis and Trypanosoma cruzi infection. The most common methods used are ELISA and other enzyme immunoassays, serological methods, PCR etc.&
