Question #140903

Why are most digestive enzymes not found in the stomach?
What body parts does digestion of carbohydrates occur?

Expert's answer

The stomach produces hydrochloric acid that significantly lowers the pH of the stomach juice. High acidity denatures proteins and inactivates enzymes. As a result, most of digestive enzymes would be inactivated in the stomach.

Digestion of carbohydrates occurs in the small intestine, i.e., duodenum, where carbohydrates digesting enzymes are produced.
