Antioxidants help protect the body from damage from outside sources. Some physical factors (i.e., ionizing radiation) induce the formation of active oxygen species that may induce lipids oxidation and DNA damage. The process leads to cell death and causes the development of various diseases (i.e., cancer). Antioxidants are molecules that neutralize reactive oxygen species transferring electrons and protons. As a result, they protect the body from the damaging effects caused by external factors.
