Descending pathways can be defined as a group of myelinated nerve fibres which contain motor information from the brain to the effector muscle and spinal cord. They are divided into two groups are given below:
In descending pathway, the circuit contains the periaqueductal grey matter in the upper brain stem. Descending pain suppression occurs by locus coeruleus, nucleus raphe magnus and nucleus reticularis gigantocellularies which inhibit the pain information signal to the spinal cord. These receptors normal target site for the neurotransmitter and endogenous opiates like endorphins and enkephenkephalins which results in the binding of the receptor at subcortical sites and changes the electrophysiological properties of neurons.
