The digestive process entails ingestion, mechanical breakdown of food by teeth, chemical breakdown absorption and finally defecation. Food is propelled through the digestive tract by peristalsis. Enzymes in the digestive system facilitate the chemical breakdown of food into simpler forms that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Digestive enzymes include amylase which is present in saliva and is secreted by both the salivary glands and the pancreas. The enzyme breaks down starch into sugars. Maltase is secreted by the small intestines and converts maltose into sugars.Lactase produced by intestinal tract cells breaks down lactose present in dairy products into glucose and galactose.Pepsinogen is produced by the gastric glands and is activated by hydrochloric acid to form pepsin which breaks down proteins into amino acids. Similarly, tripsyn secreted by the pancreas breaks down proteins. Pancreatic lipase breaks fats into fatty acids and glycerol for easy absorption. Digested food is absorbed in the small intestines.
