Question #138684

Give one gene of interest

Expert's answer

OsNRAMP5

OsNRAMP5 is a rice metal transporter involved in the absorption of manganese (Mn) from the soil. Interestingly, it also uptakes cadmium (Cd) leading to accumulation in rice crop, especially brown rice. Cd is non-essential metal with numerous toxic effects to plants and threatens human health by causing diseases. OsNRAMP5 is a gene of interest because it required for the absorption of essential metal Mn, but also absorbs non-nutrient metal Cd.
