State [3 marks] and describe [9 marks] three sustainable indigenous knowledge practices.
Three sustainable indigenous practices are - Rotational farming, shifting cultivation, pastoralism
A- Rotational farming is the practice of growing a series of different types of crops in the same area across a sequence of growing seasons. ... Additionally, crop rotations can improve soil structure and organic matter, which reduces erosion and increases farm system resilience.
B- Shifting cultivation is an agricultural system in which a person uses a piece of land, only to abandon or alter the initial use a short time later. This system often involves clearing of a piece of land followed by several years of wood harvesting or farming until the soil loses fertility.
C- Pastoralism is the extensive livestock production system that involves the tracking and use of grazing and water across a given landscape (normally a “rangeland”). Normally practiced in dryland areas, mobility is key to this system.
