Ecology is a branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms and their environment, including their relations with other organisms. It is an interdisciplinary field, cutting across the life and geophysical sciences. Ecological investigations look into two directions: (I) the nature of environments and the demands which these environments make upon the organisms that inhabit them; (II) the characteristics of organisms, species, and groups that permit or promote their tolerance of specific environmental conditions.
