Question #96375

Which of the following buffers act on long term basis to regulate ph of blood: a) haemoglobin buffer b) bicarbonate buffer c)phosphate buffer d) ammonia buffer e) plasma proteins

Expert's answer

The bicarbonate buffer in the renal system acts on long term basis to regulate the blood ph. The renal response takes 6-12hours with a maximum effect reached between 3-4days. The maximum effect is insufficient to return plasma ph to normal but because of the additional renal contribution the ph is returned towards normal.
