Going back to school after summer vacation is not the easiest thing to do. Days like these make you wonder if it actually is worth it to go back to school and do the thing and graduate. People joke about dropping out of school on twitter, there are memes about mondays and back to school moods, but under all those masks lies a serious question: “what if I don’t want to go back to school?” 

School isn’t the end-all-be-all for everyone. School also isn’t meant for everyone, and thinking about whether it’s right for you is completely normal. You wake up one day and you think about the point where you are and sometimes, you find yourself unhappy or bored or uninterested in anything about school. There are plenty of reasons why students dropout of college. 

So, what do you do?

There are lots of things you can do when you don’t want to go to school, and one of the biggest mistakes is not doing anything. There are causes and consequences as well as solutions to dropping out. But we totally understand the feeling of “I really don’t want to go back to school,” so here’s a list of things you can think about!

Make a list of Pros/Cons

Usually, when it comes to major life decisions, writing down what’s good and bad about situations help you decide what’s best for you. A list makes it easier for you to see the points that really mean something to you, whether it’s good or bad. You can then balance all those points and make a decision. 

Talk to friends/family/someone

Life is much easier to deal with if you have someone, anyone to talk to. Friends and family can offer different perspectives for you to think about. Sometimes that’s all it takes to get you set on your path through life. Sometimes teachers and professors and shine a light for you as well, reigniting a spark in school work or studies, or guide you to another subject or career choice.

Think about why you want to stop

Waking up on the wrong side of the bed, or having no motivation to do something comes and goes, so having a moment to think of why you don’t want to go back to school may help you get out of that slump and think more critically.

Find motivation

Using that list of pros/cons, you can build up enough things to motivate you to do something about it. Whether it’s to take a break from school, or go headfirst into the new school year, improving your motivation will have a more positive impact on your life. 

Take your mental health seriously

Most times that students have these ideas, they are going through something stressful. Low grades, family situations, a bad break-up, or financial reasons contribute to added stress to students. What some students overlook is that stress can lead to depression an idea that sounds good to you at the moment, but is heavily affected by your mental health.

After you’ve had a good conversation with yourself or others, the next step is to take action! This may be the hardest part of it all, but it definitely gets you where you need to go. These are just a few solutions to school dropout and whether it’s right for you or not.

Focus on improving yourself

Getting some exercise or eating healthier helps you feel physically and mentally better, which leads to better lifestyle choices. Stress levels are proven to decrease with a healthier body, plus it gives you an incentive to look and feel good as well!

Find a job related to your studies

Sometimes finding something similar to what your studies can show you more interesting things about a career path, thus helping you find motivation to continue studying. Internships and apprenticeships also networks you with other professionals and give you another perspective about jobs. 

Do some networking

Finding information about careers isn’t easy, and finding jobs is twice as difficult. But talking to other related professionals or peers may help you understand more of what you want to do, whether it requires more school or not.

Stick it out

Life is a journey and higher education sometimes is a large part of your journey. Before you went to college, you had to make many tough decisions. Now you’re thinking to yourself “I don’t want to continue school” or “school is too hard” or “I’m getting bad grades.”

This is called a sophomore slump, where your attitude goes bad after some stressful situations. But always after a slump is a comeback, where you take your experiences and thoughts and ideas and get better and do better. 

School isn’t easy. Work isn’t easy. Life isn’t easy. 

But if you take care of yourself, and you find a passion to care about, this is what really matters the most. Take your time and don’t rush into anything without thinking about it first!
