•What can you say the role of media is in a society? Consider, for instance, the history of newspapers in SA and their impact on society.
• Do you think the use of internet and social media can enhance political participation of citizens? Explain.
The internet has enhanced community information access. As a result, the media play a critical role in society as a source of information as well as a "watchdog" or scrutinizer. The media, on the other hand, is free to choose the news they find significant or interesting.
The governor of the Cape Colony began printing the government controlled Cape Town Gazette and African Advertiser in 1800, and the history of newspapers in South Africa begins there. A great number of free local and community newspapers are also available in a variety of languages.
Because social media is such a new technology, little research has been done to determine the long-term effects, good or ill, of its use. Multiple studies, however, have linked heavy social media use to an increased risk of melancholy, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicide ideation.
