According to functionalists, what do schools provide for learners that families cannot provide?
The functionalist theory views and envisioned education as a tool for social institution in the society. The theory stipulates that education contributes to the society through two modes: primary and secondary function. Primary functions encompass the intended visible contributions of education to the society while the secondary function encompass the unintended and hidden contributions of education to the society.
The Primary Function
The core value of a school in a society is to Educate students to conform with the law and carry themselves by abiding by the state and national laws and policies. Schools run by laws and policies which students must abide by and by so doing they adopt the act of being law abiding students and enforce the same culture once they complete education and exist to the real world as mature citizens.
Schools also acts as a ladder for social growth through social placement, the career departments within the school offers advice to students on career growth that suite their education and practical skills. By following on their career paths , students are able to expand into skilled workers in different fields and this provide financial growth to them.
Lastly, schools acts as a tool for social growth that is enforced right from kindergarten into university graduates. School teaches students how to get along with one another by upholding rules that govern against social injustice within the school, breaking the rules calls for punishment that can result into suspension. (Functionalist Theory on Education, 2020). By enforcing socialism, students are able to grown within a society that creates a culture of unity and respect to one another which is paramount for a peaceful existence of people within a neighborhood, town and even a nation as a whole.
The Secondary Function
School acts a platform for social growth, as students get along within the school and even into college and university, they establish long lasting relationships with one another that can be used to form a networking platform that can be used to exchange ideas for business growth and even enhance social growth.
Schools have evolved from the basic education curriculum into to social institution that not only offers education but also it has taken up the role of family in the society. The early generation relied on family to teach on culture and norms but the current generation depends on the school to take the role of family and bring out graduates with utmost social growth that they can use to foster socialism and also grow financially through networking and group work.
