Genetics and epigenetics affect us as a person in terms of behaviour and disease. Epigenetics involves control in genetics by factors other than DNA sequence. This can result in changes in genes, leading to diseases like cancer and mental retardation through inherited genetic properties. It also affects our psychological traits, thus affecting the way we associate with others. Change in psychological characteristics can affect the way we perceive situations, cultures and other people. This is because gene modification determines one’s personality, cognitive functions and behaviour. Besides, it influences how systemic structures such as public policy and corporate structure can be changed through the emerging application of epigenetics in health. Due to epigenetic modifications, our values can change due to environmental factors, exposure to new elements, and diet. Current trends in genetics and epigenetics, such as diseases like cancer and mental retardation, can help us understand their impacts on our lives.
