Colonialism had varied impacts on both China and Japan. China was colonized by the British who made the Qing dynasty to admit to a series of chastening promises, such as paying a strangely high amount of compensation over the years and grant the treaty's sovereign rule. Nevertheless, colonialism also brought some positives like the militant colonial attack resulting in a significant blow to its total capacity and thus leading china to a united nation in the direction of prosperity.

As for Japan, its colonialism was not by western power but by itself. Japanese banned overseas travel and contact with foreigners and gave the government a monopoly over foreign trade. In its trade with western colonial powers, Japan was influenced in many ways. For instance, its contact with the Portuguese power brought in Catholicism and the latest gun and gun powder technology in Japan.
