A researcher thinks that it’s harder for people to exert self-control when there are cookies in the room. She knows that the populations’ mean ability to exert self-control is 5 (on a 1 – 9 scale) with a standard deviation of 1.5. She brings 60 people into the lab and puts them in a room with a plate full of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. When she measures their ability to exert self-control, she finds that they have a mean of 2.4. Using an alpha level of .01, test her hypothesis that the temptation of cookies decreases people’s self-control.
"Tc=(2.4-5)\/(1.5\/""60"
"Tc=-13.42"
Ho: u= 5
H1: u not equal to 5
The mean of the appropriate distribution is greater than 5
