Compare the traditional project cycle, MacArthur’s project sequence and the participatory
project management cycle. Then discuss which one of them is best suited to ensure that
learning takes place and that project planning is improved.
Traditional project cycle involves the classic project life cycle which has five stages: ideation, planning, execution, monitoring/control, and closure. Project managers can decide the tools, strategies, that they prefer to use in these various stages.
MacArthur’s project sequence refers to a project sequence which uses the five major stages which are identified via identification, preparation, appraisal, negotiation and supervision.
Participatory Project Management (PPM) it refers to involvement of the public in the management of project life cycle to ensure ownership and sustainability of the project. A good example is Public private partnerships (PPP) and Public Private Investments(PPI) projects. All these project management models have same objective of delivering the projects but different techniques.
Participatory project management is best suited in ensuring that project planning is improved and learning takes place. PPM allows suggestions from the public, which helps in suiting the public needs in the project implementation. With this model students can learn a lot from project management, planning and implementation. As the name suggests, it involves participation from concerned stakeholders.
