Hazara people are a minority in Afghanistan since they speak Persian and live in the country's central region. Because they have Middle Eastern traits, Pashtuns do not have the same distinguishing appearance as Hazaras. Unlike the Hazaras, Pashtuns speak the Pashto language and are Sunni Muslims.

Outsiders or invaders placed the title "Pathan" on Pashtuns, and many Pashtuns argue that it is not their original name and so is not legitimate. In Pakistan, it is frequently used as a pejorative epithet against Pashtuns. To avoid offending any Pashtuns, it may be safer to refer to them as Pashtuns rather than Pathans.
