Question #125799

How is working memory “working” and how does it interact with sensory memory and long-term memory to create new memories?

Expert's answer

Information from the sensory memory has a short retention period that often range from milliseconds to a few seconds after which it gets transferred to the working memory. There is no manipulation of information that occurs in the sensory memory.

Working memory works with the short-term memory by combining knowledge and strategies from the long-term memory bank to execute calculations or make decisions which then gets stored in the long-term memory that often encompasses different memories that range from a few days to decades.
