The strategic options are listed below:

  • Stop maintaining the legacy system and replace it with a new one
  • Continue maintaining the system wasting money and resources
  • Upgrade/update the legacy system for easier maintenance.

I would normally replace all or part of a system rather than continue maintenance of the software when the current state becomes a too heavy burden in terms of resources required to support it.
