Study the adapter structure in the diagram below and then answer the questions that follow. Diagram: Q.3.1 Using suitable examples, briefly explain functions of the five components of this network adapter. (10) Q.3.2 Provide a detailed operation analysis of this network adapter.
Q.3.1
Link Interface - Connect the physical layer and the data link layer's MAC sublayer in the sub-stem.
PE-Processing Element- This component is responsible for data movement, protocol processing and data management.
(Direct Memory Access) DMA Unit- Handle the fast movement of data between the memory and the link interface.
Memory- This is where data is being stored in the network adapter.
End system interface- Serve as a an interface between the end system and the network adapter.
Q.3.2
Network adapter consists of memory for data storage, processing element, input or output subsystems, and DMA unit.
Network adapter has a structure similar to that of conventional computer systems.
The operation of network adapter involves processing, transmitting and, receiving packets in two directions towards and from the network link.
Transmission and reception of packets in network adapters are analogous processes.
Network adapter allows computer in a network to communicate to each other
