  1. Digital signal is preferable since it has a better transmission rate, lesser distortion and are not expensive and are more flexible.
  2. Line coding is the process of converting digital data to digital signals. By this technique we converts a sequence of bits to a digital signal. At the sender side digital data are encoded into a digital signal and at the receiver side the digital data are recreated by decoding the digital signal.
  3. The reasons behind transmission impairments are:
  • attenuation- loss of energy as the signal travels through a medium.
  • distortion- a signal changes its shape or form.
  • noise- these include thermal noise, impulse noise and induced noise that corrupt the signal.

4) Signal encoding techniques means converting data to signal. These techniques are analog data to analog signal, and digital data to analog signals.

5) In circuit-switched network, packets reach in an orderly manner to the destination while in datagram networks, data packets arrive their destination in random order.

  • Datagram networks are less reliable while circuit-switched networks are highly reliable.
  • Datagram has high efficiency but delay more while circuit-switched networks have low efficiency but delay less.
