Distributed Coordination Function is the common mode used to transmit the physical medium. Mostly, it is used in both cases of infrastructure networks and ad hoc. Any Wi-Fi device must have an implementation of this mode. The DCF corresponds to an advanced version of Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA).
