Some of the principles to be applied in the establishment of consultative relations with NGOs include: the organization shall be concerned with matters within competence of the economic and Social Council and its subsidiary bodies, aims and purposes of the organization should conform with spirit and purposes and principles of UN charter, the organization should support the work of the UN and promote knowledge of its principles and activities, "organization" should refer to non-governmental organizations at the national, regional or international levels, greater participation of NGOs in developing countries as well as economies in transition should be encouraged, the organization shall be recognized standing within its particular field of competence, the organization shall have a representative structure and possess appropriate mechanisms of accountability and the arrangement should not bear an overburden to the council or transform it from a body of coordination of policy and action to a general form of discussion among others.
