1. Fossil evidence - scientists have amassed fossil data that explains much of the evolutionary history of life by relating the extinct past species to present-day species. They determine the age of the fossils and the resulting fossil record shows a progress of evolution.
2. Anatomical evidence - species often share similar physical structures because those particular features, homologous structures, were present in a common ancestor e.g. bones in the appendages of a human, dog, whale and bird share the same overall construction resulting from their origin in the appendages of a common ancestor.
3. Biogeographical evidence - the global distribution of organisms and the unique features of island species best reflect evolution and geological change.
4. Molecular biology - structures of molecules of life reflect descent with modification. the universality of DNA as the genetic material as well as the almost universal genetic code and machinery of DNA replication and expression points towards evidence of a common ancestor for all life.
