List six (6) main attributes of traditional diplomacy and discuss each of them with salient examples.
Traditional diplomacy was founded on the following;
1.Honest lies- A diplomat is considered as a noble man or woman who is sent to another country to lie and spy on behalf of their country.For example a diplomat would inform their country of origin anything being plotted by the host country against their country of origin.
2. Qualified truthfulness-This means being loyal and truthful to your country.For example a diplomat should not put their country in an awkward situation they have to check the information they let out.
3. Integrity in appearance.Traditional diplomacy sought to be morally upright.That is it does not support that which is perceived to be of questionable moral character.
4 Outward politeness-This is respect of other people's view and respect for their cultural differences.For example some countries may have different practices and cultures that are only popular to them.Traditional diplomacy seeks to embrace all this different cultures.
5. Self- satisfying fairness-Traditional diplomacy seeks to ensure equality of states and fairness in their relations.That is there should be no discrimination in the treatment of different countries.
6. Strict observance of protocol and secrecy.-This was important in traditional diplomacy during negotiations and as they awaited the outcome of these negotiations.For example when two countries were at war or in any form of dispute,there would be strict observance of secrecy if any negotiations were taking place until when a final decision was made.
