Question #284946

Activity 8.3: Linear versus Rotational

How does a rigid body rotate if the ω and α have the same sign (say +)? Compare these relationships between linear acceleration (a) and linear velocity (v) for straight line motion.

Expert's answer

For both linear and angular acceleration and velocity the sign of acceleration impacts the sign of velocity in the following way:

1) a body started with positive initial velocity with positive acceleration at infinite time results in positive final velocity

2) a body started with positive initial velocity with negative acceleration at infinite time results in negative final velocity.
