Question #276642

How does a fluid exert pressure? (3-5 sentences)

Expert's answer

All particles of the fluid are in permanent motion. Each particle has a mass, thus, it has inertia, so, the collision of the particle with the walls of a vessel causes certain mechanical stress. The stress the walls of the vessel experience as a result of billions of collisions with the particles of the fluid each second is called pressure.
